Students in grades Pre-K 3 through Grade 8 attend Library. The broad overall objective, beginning in Pre–Kindergarten and continuing through 8th grade, is to encourage reading, critical, and independent thinking through understanding and inquiry at an grade appropriate level.
Early childhood grades are introduced to the roles of author and illustrator and begin to differentiate between fiction and informational text, and practice sequencing and predicting. As students progress through the primary grades, they analyze parts of a book, identify, define, and compare features of fiction and non-fiction texts, discuss various genres of literature, and develop skills and knowledge which enable them to use the on-line library system so they can locate books independently.
Middle School topics and instruction include the process of locating and organizing information for a research paper, taking notes, paraphrasing, documenting sources, using footnotes, endnotes and preparing a works cited page in accordance with the Modern Language Arts Standards. (MLA). Plagiarism and its serious repercussions are emphasized. Internet and social media safety are discussed and identifying and recognizing reliable websites is part of the instruction.
Collaboration with grade and subject teachers provides a connection between classroom curriculum and library instruction and is an integral part of our program. With a collection of over 7,000 copies, availability of chromebooks and three desktop computers, our library provides a welcoming, vibrant, and challenging learning environment for all students.
