The Grade 1 curriculum builds upon the foundational skills developed in kindergarten while introducing more complex concepts and deeper learning experiences.   The curriculum aims to build upon foundational skills while fostering a love for learning, curiosity, and critical thinking skills essential for future academic success

Subject Areas:

1. Language Arts:

   • Reading: Phonics, fluency, comprehension strategies, and exposure to various genres.
   • Use of Fundations: a word-study program grounded in the science of reading. 
   • Writing: Sentence structure, grammar basics, creative writing, and handwriting.
   • Spelling and Vocabulary: Building sight words, spelling patterns, and expanding vocabulary.

2. Mathematics:

   • Number Sense and Operations: Addition, subtraction, place value, and understanding numbers up to 100.
   • Geometry: Shapes, spatial awareness, and basic geometric concepts.
   • Measurement and Data: Length, weight, time, and interpreting simple graphs.
   • Use of Sadlier Math Curriculum

3. Science:

   • Life Science: Plants, animals, habitats, and basic ecology.
   • Physical Science: Properties of matter, forces and motion, and simple machines.
   • Earth Science: Weather, seasons and basic geology.

4. Social Studies:

   • Community and Citizenship: Roles within the community and citizenship responsibilities.
   • History: Basic timelines, historical figures, and cultural traditions.
   • Geography: Maps, continents, oceans, and basic geographic features.

5. Religion:

   • Holy Days: LEarning more about the Holy Days in the Church calendar
   • Daily Prayer

• Use of iPads in daily rotation.

Assessment and Evaluation:

• Formative and Summative Assessments: Using quizzes, assessments to track progress.
• Feedback and Reflection: Providing feedback to guide learning and promoting self-assessment skills.
• NWEA MAP Testing: Students take the fall, winter and spring tests. Data drives differentiation and leveling of students.
• IXL: Students sign onto Clever daily to work on assigned tasks.
• Parent Communication: Regular updates to discuss progress and address any concerns.
